We Want Wildwood
For over 30 years, the Indoor Drumline at Avonworth Middle/High School has been going to Wildwood, New Jersey to participate in a large scale competition against other bands. It is the ultimate goal for an Indoor Drumline to recieve the privillage of going to Wildwood to participate in this event. Every tiring practice, every seemingly unbearable competition and most importantly, every bit of effort is all in preparation for Wildwood. Luckily, our band was given the opportunity to go this year, as we do nearly every year, however, due to the decision of Dr. Valerie MacDonald, the superintendent here at Avonworth, our band has had the option of going to Wildwood destroyed.
A meeting reguarding the trip to Wildwood was held on: April 2nd, 2008. Three members of the Administration attended, Mr. Thomas Ralston, Principal of the Middle School, Dr. Kenneth Lockette, Principal of the High School and most importantly Dr. Valerie Macdonald, superintendent of Avonworth. They announced that the trip to Wildwood, New Jersey would be cancelled for a reason that they could not specify at the current date and time, although they could say that there were multiple "saftey concerns" for students attending the trip, and for that, it must be cancelled.
The three attending members of the administration also made a claim that the School Board of Avonworth made a vote on whether or not this trip should be allowed to happen, they claimed that the School Board voted to cancel this trip.
After this claim was made, a concerned band parent stood up called out a member of the school board who is also a band parent, she asked, "Did you vote on this?" The response was priceless, "No" the member of the school board replied. Dr. Valerie MacDonald was caught lying just seconds after she did it! It brings up a very vaild point, one might think, "How can we trust a woman that just fabricated part of her story to make it sound better to us?"
Immediatly, there was an backlash...
The Administration was questioned as to why they were not sharing the said reasons with the parents at the meeting, whose children would be in "danger" while on the trip. They would not dignify the audience with a response, but merley said state that they could not share the reasons becuase of parties involved and respect for their privacy.
We may never know why the Wildwood Trip was cancelled, we may never know why the administration thinks that members of the band that would visit Wildwood would be in "danger", if members of the band were to be in any danger, it seems just to let them know what this danger is.
